BRISBANE, April 7 AAP - A mother caused brain damage to her second new born baby justa year after she was sentenced for causing similar bashing and shaking injuries to herfirst child, a court was told today.

The 27-year-old woman, from Warwick, in south-east Queensland, cannot be named underQueensland law to protect the identity of her children.

She has pleaded not guilty to two counts of causing grievous bodily harm and 10 countsof assault causing bodily harm to her second child, a boy, throughout the first sevenweeks of his life during May and June 2000.

Prosecutor Ron Swanwick (Swanwick) told a Brisbane District Court jury the baby hadbrain swelling, skull fractures and multiple rib and limb fractures and like his firstborn sister would suffer permanent brain damage as a result of being shaken.

Mr Swanwick said the baby boy had his ribs crushed or squeezed while being shaken,as well as suffering direct forceful blows to the rib cage and leg injuries.

The injuries came to light when a child care nurse noticed bruising to the baby's eye,and he was referred on for further investigation.

The woman had pleaded guilty in a District Court in south-east Queensland in May 1999to causing grievous bodily harm to her first child in January 1998.

The girl had been born four months premature and was only home for 18 days before anx-ray revealed the multiple injuries strikingly similar to the ones for which she is nowon trial.

Mr Swanwick said that in a twist to the latest case, the father of the second babyhad confessed to police that he caused the injuries.

However, Mr Swanwick said his account was not credible as it did not coincide withthe physical evidence.

The trial, before Judge Brian Boulton, is expected to last more than a week.
