NT: Man who served a year for theft of towel back in court

A Darwin man, fresh from serving a year in jail for stealing a towel, has been accused
of indecently assaulting a 69-year-old woman.

KEVIN ANTHONY COOK, 30, came to national attention last May when he was convicted of
the theft of a towel under the Northern Territory's mandatory sentencing laws.

He was jailed for one year because it was his third conviction under the laws.

COOK was released from jail on April 14 but has again appeared before Darwin Magistrates
Court after the alleged assault.

His case is due to be heard tomorrow.

He is charged with aggravated assault relating to an alleged attack on a woman on a
Darwin beach yesterday.

He is also charged with stealing a bicycle worth about $150.

If convicted of the offence, police prosecutor STUART DAVIS says COOK could receive
a tougher sentence for stealing the bicycle than for the assault charge because property
offences carry a mandatory term.
